Department of English

The Department of English started its journey in 1911. Since then the Department has always been a centre of excellence. In 2001 post graduation was introduced in English and that marked the beginning of another phase of its academic pursuit. The students of the department were privileged to receive the services of the eminent Tagore scholar, Edward Thompson in the 1920’s as well as some other nationally and internationally acclaimed scholars.

The department has an adequate number of efficient and competent faculties who cater to the academic need of the students. The teachers are well published and have academic mobility which results in the phenomenal success of the students. The competence of the faculties is reflected in the uniform brilliant results of the students over the last few years in the university examinations and the distinguished record of research activities and publications as well.

The Department of English has always been the leading department in the college not only for its academic enterprises but also for inculcating values, finer sensibilities of life, and generating in students a keen interest to cater to the demands of the community. One after another feathers were added to the cap of the Department and the college as a whole because of the committed service of the eminent, erudite scholars on the faculty and some dedicated students who, in spite of the toughness of the topography and the economic backwardness of this region, create wonders.

The Department has been publishing a refereed research journal, Appropriations since 2005. Its eleventh volume has come out. This research journal has earned a nationwide popularity now and the contributors are mostly from different universities across the nation. It has an international serial number and has been receiving contributions from abroad as well.

The Department has started a research centre for American Studies, Australian Studies, and Canadian Studies which will definitely help the students in their academic enterprises.

Weaknesses:

1. As a PG Department, we are currently understaffed and it is very difficult to manage a huge workload under CBCS system with present faculty strength.

2. Most of the Bengali medium students find it difficult to overcome the language barrier in acquiring in-depth knowledge of English language and Literature.

3. Some students with the feeble economic condition and family support, are unable to buy costly texts and reference books.

4. Lack of adequate funds for buying more books for the seminar library.

5.  Inadequate equipment for making the Language Lab technologically advanced.

6. Requirement of more computers for the students to access the internet, considering the good strength of students of the Department.

7. Lack of space for any special student-related academic activity.

8. Unavailability of funds for running NET/SET coaching for PG students.

9. Unavailability of funds for preparing students for competitive examinations.

10. Lack of proper ventilation in rooms.

Opportunities:

 1. The research centre has the potential of developing into a full-fledged resource centre for research scholars.

2. The department can explore the opportunity of involving alumni particularly those serving as college or university teachers now, in guiding the current students for a better future.

3. The alumni can be involved in providing financial assistance/ scholarships/ endowments to the students in need and the students with bright academic potential.

4. Opportunities are there to involve some exceptionally advanced students in research activities.

5. British council, USIS, and all such reputed research centres can be explored by the serious students under the guidance of the faculty members.

Challenges:

1. To overcome the language handicap of students.

2. To maintain the academic standard of the department with the shortage of faculty.

3. To make students seriously engaged in reading books and journals amidst the growing popularity of social networking sites.

4. To motivate students to continue with academic career amidst this crisis of jobs in general and also in non-technical disciplines.

5. To provide the students with suitable academic exposure despite the remote location of the college.

6. To equip students with the latest changes and developments in the academic field all over the world.

Future Plan of the Department:

  • Extension of Infrastructure
  • Introduction of Research Centre
  • MoU & related activities with reputed foreign institutions
