History was an elective subject of study in early years of Bankura Christian College. The first distinguished teacher was Woston Smith, who taught History and Economics for five years without remuneration. He was a paper-setter of History (Degree Course) of Calcutta University and a syllabus-farmer of Dacca University. Later on he served the cause of education in various other capacitates.

Two other eminent teachers of the department were C.F. Ball and William Bailey. C.F. Ball served the college as the Principal from 1938 to 1947; W. Bailey was the Bursar of the college during that period, in which the History section of the college library was enriched considerably. In the mid-twentieth century, Prof. Dhirendranath Datta joined the department as its Head and was assisted by Swell, a missionary lady, as a part-time teacher, who, however left India for home in 1957.
