The department started its journey in the session 1996-97 with only pass course. But since 2004 when honours course was introduced, it entered in the mainstream of the college. Now the department has been emerged as one of the most well equipped and well placed undergraduate department of the University of Burdwan. Within only eight years’ journey, the department has managed to possess all kinds of conventional and modern instruments and a high quality department library with more than one thousand books of all sub-disciplines. The department already has three full time teachers and one permanent part time teacher. So in terms of students’ support, it has emerged as one of the best in the region. So far, seven batches of students have been passed out and many of them are well placed in academic and research fields in various universities around the country. All the teachers of the department are actively engaged in research and contributed more than thirty research papers in various journals of repute.

VISION

The Department of Geography should act as nodal research agency in various sub-disciplines with special thrust in spatial data handling. It aims to fill the gap between the entrepreneurs and the academicians in executing regional development plans to fulfill the needs of the people of this economically backward part of the state.

MISSION STATEMENT

  1. To run the academic programmes of the department with utmost care to our beloved and most valued students.

  2. To extend research activities in varying sub disciplines of the subject by undertaking various research projects.

  3. To establish a geoinformatics centre with state of the art RS-GIS lab with all modern equipments.

  4. To organize training programmes and workshops in RS-GIS-GPS technology for the creation of awareness regarding this newly emerging tool of geography among the learners of this backward area.
