Bengali as a compulsory course of study in Arts was included right from the year of establishment of Bankura Christian College. The missionaries – including Rev. John Mitchell, the first Principal of the college – never undermined the importance of Bengali; Rev. Ralph Blow wanted to lead the department towards comparative studies and Prof. Edward J.Thompson was an accomplished Tagore-scholar himself.

In the early twentieth century, the department was privileged to have students like the poet Sajanikanta Das, the noted writer Ramendu Dutta and the historian Ramanuj Kar. With the introduction of the Honours Course, the department had in its ranks, some outstanding scholars like Sukumar Sen, who unfortunately had to leave the college some time after taking admission, and Sultana Begum, the editor of Jagarani, the first of its kind in Bankura by women.

Also associated with this department were Prof. Kshudiram Das, D.Litt., Prof .Gopal Lal De, one of the famous Kallol poets, Prof. Sukhamay Chattopadhyay, Ananda Bagchi, a noted literateur, Ananda Roy (Visiting Professor) and Dr. Rabindra Nath Samanta, poet and once, the Head of the Department. During British rule the department was graced by the presence of eminent personalities (in various ways) such as Annadasankar Roy, Ramsaran Ghosh and Sasankasekhar Bandopadhyay.

The teachers and students of the department were involved directly or indirectly during Rabindranath’s visit to Bankura, the discovery of Susunia Hills, the establishment of Bankura Saraswat Samaj and the occasion to confer D.Litt. on Jogesh Chandra Roy Bidyanidhi. More recently, students of the department like Arpita Chakraborty, Nitai Patra, Tara Bhattacharya, Sushmita Chakraborti (a researcher), Prof. Beenapani Mahapatra, the teacher and poet Sailajananda Mukhopadhyay and Prof. Arabindo Chattopadhyay, the noted columnist and member of the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad, have contributed substantially to the educational and cultural life of Bengal.
